The Design Lessons I Learned in 2024 (And What I’m Taking Into 2025)

Hi besties!

As 2024 comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible journey this year has been—a whirlwind of creativity, challenges, and growth. From tackling new projects to rethinking old habits, I’ve learned so much about what it means to be a designer and creative. Here are some of the biggest lessons I’m taking with me into 2025:

1. Embracing Imperfection

This year, I learned that imperfection is often what makes a design feel real and inviting. The small quirks, mismatched elements, and personal touches bring life to a space in a way that perfection simply can’t. By embracing the imperfect, I’ve found a way to create designs that feel approachable and full of character. In 2025, I’ll lean further into the beauty of imperfection—it’s where the magic happens.

2. The Importance of Boundaries

As a creative, it’s easy to blur the lines between work and life, but this year I learned the importance of setting boundaries. From limiting my work hours to saying “no” to projects that don’t align with my goals, I’ve found that protecting my time and energy leads to better work. In 2025, I’m doubling down on working smarter, not harder.

3. Timeless Design Is the Foundation

This year reinforced that sticking with classic and traditional design elements is the backbone of any successful project. Timelessness is always the goal, creating spaces that feel enduring and will be beautiful for years to come. However, what truly makes a design special is the character each client brings to it. By weaving in personal touches and unique details, every project becomes a perfect blend of tradition and individuality. In 2025, I’ll continue to aim for designs that stand the test of time while celebrating each client’s story.

4. Function First, Always

Aesthetics matter, but this year reminded me that form must follow function. Clients and readers alike appreciate spaces that work for their lives, not just ones that look pretty. I’ve focused on practical design choices—like maximizing storage or selecting materials that are as durable as they are beautiful. Next year, I’ll continue to prioritize creating spaces that are both livable and inspiring.

5. Growth Happens Outside Your Comfort Zone

This year pushed me to try things I’d been hesitant about—like experimenting with bolder color palettes or taking on new service offerings. Some experiments worked beautifully, others… not so much. But every step outside my comfort zone taught me something valuable. Heading into 2025, I’m leaning into the uncomfortable and seeing where it takes me!

6. Community Is Everything

Collaboration and connection have been a highlight of this year. Whether it’s engaging with clients, bouncing ideas off peers, or hearing feedback from readers, I’ve realized just how much I thrive on community. As I move into 2025, I’m prioritizing relationships and finding new ways to connect with others in this creative space.
