I am not afraid to admit it… I think I’ve found the perfect reading order for anyone ready to dive headfirst into the world of Dramione fanfiction. If you’re new to this ship, it can definitely feel overwhelming to know where to start. There are thousands of stories, ranging from fluffy one-shots to full-on epic, life changes novels that will consume your soul.
This list maps out the perfect hurt-to-heal cycle. It will break your heart, piece it back together, and then set it on fire all over again (in the best way, I promise). It will definitely give you the “You’re gonna hurt, but you’re going to be happy about it”. By the end, you’ll understand why so many of us never recover from this ship, but honestly, why would you want to?
*As always, if you’re sensitive to certain topics, be sure to check the fic’s trigger warnings before diving in… this list contains some heavy ones.
1. Manacled by SenLinYu
The gateway drug of Dramione. Dark, haunting, and truly, absolutely unforgettable. You’ll never be the same after this story. Seriously… life will divest into before Manacled and after Manacled. This fic is my Roman Empire. It sets the stage for the emotional rollercoaster of fics that follow.
*Update: this one has been removed from AO3 to be rewritten and published. The published story is called “Alchemised” by Senlinyu… and it is truly so amazing! Please grab a copy if you can. And if you don’t already have Manacled downloaded, I did find a reddit thread where the link is posted.
2. Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love by isthisselfcare (linked here)
After Manacled, you deserve some fluff. This fic is witty, charming, and full of banter (uggghhhh the banter!). It gives you the balance you need before diving back into darker, heavier reads.
*Update: another one that is being rewritten for publication, yay! I finished this one as well and just do yourself a favor and grab it for your next book restock, this is part one of two: “The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy” by Brigette Knightley. I enjoyed this one so much and can’t wait for the next installment!
3. Secrets and Masks by Emerald_Slytherin (linked here)
This one bridges the gap perfectly between the lighter reads. You had all the fun banter and playfulness in DMATMOOBIL… and now it’s time to hurt. It is emotional, layered, and full of that delicious tension that makes Dramione so addictive. And please… make sure you’re alone when you get to the ending or you’ll end up like me, sitting there with your partner looking at you like you’ve lost your mind while you’re SOBBING. And I mean full-on ugly crying… totally worth it by the way.
4. Remain Nameless by HeyJude19 (linked here)
Soft. Intimate. Beautiful. It’s a healing balm after the beautiful heartbreak we know as Secrets & Masks. Hermione and Draco’s relationship is written with such care that you’ll want to live in this story forever. I would keep this one downloaded to re-read when the dark fics break our hearts.
5. Green Light by SereneMusafir (linked here)
A masterpiece of longing and quiet devastation. It will crack your heart open in ways you didn’t know were possible, and yet, it feels necessary. I will never stop talking about how much I love this fic. Seriously, the writing is beautiful and just absolute perfection. I’m literally tearing up just thinking about it. Ugh it’s just so good! This is probably my favorite book of all time. The writing is just SO DAMN GOOD. And I apologize in advance… this one is gonna hurt. Consider this your warning.
6. The Right Thing to Do by lovebitca8 (linked here)
This fic is a fan-favorite for a reason. Like the others on this list, it’s a longer read and gives you the kind of sprawling, slow-burn romance you can really sink into. And it’s another fic with such good banter, it’s just *chefs kiss*.
7. All the Wrong Things by lovebitca8 (linked here)
The follow-up to The Right Thing to Do. Just as good, just as addictive, and absolutely essential if you loved the first.
8. The Auction by lovebitca8
This one is the AU version of The Right Thing to Do & All the Wrong Things. It’s dark, wildly entertaining, and one you can really sink your teeth into.
*Update: this one is actually being turned into a published trilogy! You can find it here: “Rose in Chains” by Julie Soto. Here is a reddit thread where you can download the original story, but definitely pick up Rose in Chains if you are able… I seriously loved it.
9. Oops I Joined the Good Guys by Rogue_Roxy (linked here)
Lighthearted, f*cking hilarious, and so clever. By this point, you’ll be deep enough into Dramione that you’ll totally appreciate how this fic pokes at canon in such a fun way. Another fic who’s praises I will sing all day long.
And then…
Kiss the next decade of your reading life goodbye 😉 because once you’re hooked, there is no turning back. You’ll be adding bookmarks, downloading PDFs, and saying “just one more chapter” at 2 a.m until the end of time.
Final Thoughts
This order is actually pretty close to how I started my own Dramione reading journey, but with a better balance of dark and fluffy (because with some of these fics, you really do need to heal your heart before moving on). It takes you through everything… heartbreak, humor, healing, and then straight back into obsession. Whether you’re brand new to this ship or just in the mood for a refresh, this lineup will keep you hooked and emotionally wrecked in the best possible way.
