Transforming Our Kitchen Floor DIY Update

Hey friends!

Guess what? We’re back with more DIY updates on our home kitchen! This DIY makeover has made a world of difference. We decided to change things up with the flooring by installing peel and stick vinyl tiles. The results? Our kitchen got a whole new life! Come along as I walk you through the process, share some handy tips, and show you how easy it can be to transform your space on a budget.

Here is a couple photos of what the kitchen looked like when we moved in.

With the flooring being cracked, and the grout severely stained there really was no saving it. The tile was a not-so-terrible shade of beige-ish gray, but it was one of those tiles that just never looked clean no matter how much I scrub it. So, long story short, this was not going to work for me and my mental health 🙃. It was time for it to go!

Flooring Updates

Now, onto my favorite part – the peel and stick vinyl tile flooring. I saw this vinyl flooring on Chris Loves Julia’s Instagram story and said “that’s the one!”. It was exactly what we needed to update our cracked and tired ceramic tile flooring. By applying it directly over the existing tile, this was a DIY I was able to tackle all on my own. Not only was it a budget-friendly option (only about $2 per square foot!), but it also gave our kitchen floor a fresh, modern look without the hassle of demoing the existing tile.

As far as tools go, there are very few you will be needing for this project. What you do need is a pen, box cuter, straight edge, measuring tape, and spray adhesive. These tiles do have adhesive on the back of them, but I used this spray adhesive just for added durability. This is the second time I’ve used Floor Pops for a DIY flooring update, and they have been easy to use and turned out adorable both times.

How to DIY Flooring

  1. Repair Imperfections: Fill any cracks or uneven areas in the existing tiles with a suitable filler. Smooth it out and be sure to let it dry completely.
  2. Measure and Plan: Measure your space and plan your layout to minimize cutting and ensure a balanced design. My existing tiles were 12″x 12″, so I just used one of the corners of tile to start my layout and worked my way out from there.
  3. Cut Tiles: Cut the peel and stick vinyl tiles as needed to fit the edges and corners of the area. Use a utility knife and a straightedge for precise cuts. I found that you don’t need to cut all the way through the tile. Once they have been scored, they will easily snap across the score line.
  4. Peel and Stick: I then sprayed the floor where the tile was to be placed with the spray adhesive. This is the one I used HERE. Peel the backing off the vinyl tile, then position the tile carefully and securely press it into place.
  5. Align Tiles: Continue laying the tiles, ensuring each one is aligned with the previous one for a seamless look.
  6. Press Down: After all tiles are installed, press down on the tiles and ensure good adhesion. Some areas did require me to place weights to hold down corners while it dried.

All in all, we love the way it turned out! And it gave us the perfect cottage feel that I wanted. We’ve had them installed for a few weeks and so far, they are working out great! They are easy to clean and feel great to walk on. With spending less than $500, this update was more than worth it!

More updates on the kitchen to come! Waiting on our new faucet and a couple other finishes and we can do a final reveal. I can’t wait! I hope that you gained some inspiration from this post and use it to transform your space into one that you love!
