Design Myths We Need to End Right Now

Because if I have to design one more room that includes all of these things, it may be my thirteenth reason.

Let’s get something straight: your home is not a showroom floor. And yet, we keep seeing the same tired advice recycled like it’s sacred gospel: match your woods, keep everything neutral, don’t paint the ceiling, blah blah blah. I’m here to tell you: no. absolutely not. stop it.

So, here are the design myths I need to go buh-bye. Let’s go myth-hunting, shall we?

Myth: You Can’t Mix Different Wood Finishes

Let’s bust this one wide open: mixing wood finishes isn’t just okay… it’s what makes a space feel layered and intentional.
Matching all your wood tones perfectly is not “classic,” it’s flat. You know what looks more high-end? A warm oak dining table paired with a dark walnut credenza and a few black stained picture frames thrown in for drama. Variety equals depth. If everything matches, it screams “I bought this as a set from the box furniture store.”

The one. The only. Heidi Caillier Designs. Proving once again, that NO, wood tones definitely don’t need to match. *Heart-Eye Emoji*

Myth: All Your Metals Need to Match

Gone are the days of matchy-matchy everything. This isn’t 2011 and we’re not building a bathroom with brushed nickel faucet, brushed nickel pulls, brushed nickel light fixture, and brushed nickel soul.

Mix your metals. Brass with black iron? Gorgeous. Polished nickel with oil-rubbed bronze? Stunning.
The trick is simple: choose one dominant finish and let the others play supporting roles. It’s like casting a movie; one lead, a few scene-stealers, and everyone else just needs to know their place.

This is one of my absolute favorite spaces EVER (and by space, I mean this entire house), by the amazing Pierce & Ward.

Myth: Small Rooms Should Only Use Light Colors

This one needs to be buried in the backyard under a full moon. Darker hues in a small space? Incredible. Cozy. Intentional. Sexy, even. The size of the room doesn’t change… only how you experience it. A deep navy powder room? Yes. A moody green reading nook? Absolutely.

And let’s address the cousin of this myth:
“Painting your ceilings will make the room feel smaller.”
Nope.
If you’re going for a fully drenched, enveloped vibe—especially in rich tones—painting the ceiling adds to the space. It removes harsh visual lines, creates flow, and makes everything feel like it was actually designed, and not just rushed through.

This delicious powder bath and mudroom know that they deserve a moment to shine, and they took it. These stunning jewel tones selected by the Master of Design – Whittney Parkinson.

Myth: All My Furniture Needs to Match

I’m begging you: stop buying bedroom sets. There is no faster way to say “good enough” than a matching headboard, dresser, and nightstand. You deserve better. Your room deserves better.

Mix your pieces. Curate your space. Pair a painted dresser with a cane nightstand. Add a vintage mirror. Throw in an upholstered headboard that doesn’t match anything but somehow makes everything feel like it belongs.

Same goes for your living room. If you bought your sofa, coffee table, and side tables from the same “collection,” I’m sending you straight to decor jail. Mix it up. Get two different sofas. Add a table that contrasts in shape or finish. Let your space feel layered, not duplicated.

*Siiiiiiggggghhhhhhh*. Once again… Heidi Caillier. She can seriously do no wrong when it comes to her designs.

She is beauty. She is grace. She’s Ashley Lavonne Interiors. Ugh it’s just so good.

Myth: Neutral Colors Are Boring

Neutrals are not boring. Flat neutrals are boring.

Layered neutrals? Earthy tones? Texture on texture with some vintage patina? That’s art.

A tone-on-tone room in linen, plaster, rattan, and ceramic? Dreamy. Neutrals let form and material shine, and when done right, they create spaces that feel calm, thoughtful, and expensive. Not a single bright color in sight, and yet… not a yawn to be found.

This may contain: an elegant dining room with white walls and marble table surrounded by wicker chairs in front of a fireplace
The details take this all-neutral room to *chef’s kiss*.

Let’s Put These Myths to Rest

Design isn’t about rules. It’s about risk, personality, and perspective. The next time someone tells you everything has to match or that dark paint is scary, feel free to send them this post. Or just… smile politely and go do the exact opposite.

Because the real myth?
That there’s only one “right” way to design a home.
