My past Dark Academia posts have been some of the most popular on the blog, so clearly, I’m not the only one obsessed with moody libraries, gothic architecture, and dimly lit spaces that smell like books. If you’re here, I already know you get it. And if you’re looking for a city that feels like it was designed for this aesthetic, let me introduce you to your next travel destination: Edinburgh.
This Scottish capital isn’t just rich in history; it feels like a living, breathing dark academia novel. The medieval streets, candlelit cafés, and ancient libraries make it the perfect place to indulge your literary (and slightly dramatic) side. If you’ve ever dreamt of sipping coffee in a Victorian café while writing in a leather-bound notebook or wandering through a centuries-old cemetery in the fog, congratulations—you’ve just found your dream destination.
So, for another post in my Postcards & Moodboards series, here’s everything you need to know to make your Edinburgh trip a full dark academia design experience.
Where to Go for Peak Dark Academia Vibes
1. Wander the Old Town
Walking through Edinburgh’s Old Town is like stepping into a gothic novel. The winding cobblestone streets, towering stone buildings, and hidden alleyways (called closes) make it impossibly atmospheric.
- Victoria Street – The real-life inspiration for Diagon Alley, lined with quirky bookshops, vintage boutiques, and colorful storefronts.
- The Royal Mile – The heart of the city, with medieval architecture and the kind of old-world charm that makes you question what century you’re in.
- Mary King’s Close – An underground street where people lived (and died) in the 1600s. Creepy? Absolutely. A must-see? Without a doubt.

2. Visit the Most Aesthetic Libraries & Bookshops
If your ideal day involves getting lost in a bookstore and running your fingers over antique book spines, welcome home. Edinburgh has some of the best bookshops in the world, and yes, they’re all stunning.
- Armchair Books – A secondhand bookshop that feels like a labyrinth of vintage books and forgotten stories. Dusty, chaotic, and perfect.
- Topping & Company – Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, rolling ladders, and complimentary tea while you browse. It doesn’t get more literary elite than this.

3. Experience the University of Edinburgh’s Gothic Architecture
If Dark Academia™ had an official campus, it would be the University of Edinburgh. Think: towering stone buildings, hidden courtyards, and the kind of intimidatingly grand libraries that make you want to take up poetry.
- Old College – A breathtaking neoclassical building with the perfect academic courtyard for slow, brooding walks.
- McEwan Hall – A lecture hall that looks like it was designed for deep, philosophical debates.

4. Hauntingly Beautiful Spots for a Walk
No dark academia trip is complete without a brooding walk through a historically significant location. Edinburgh has no shortage of spots that make you feel like you’re in a ghost story.
- Greyfriars Kirkyard – A historic cemetery with Thomas Riddell’s grave (yes, that Tom Riddle). Haunting and literary? Sign me up.
- Dean Village – A quiet riverside area with picturesque, old-world charm.
- Arthur’s Seat – Hike to the top of this extinct volcano for misty, panoramic views of the city.

5. The Best Cafés & Pubs for Reading & Writing
Edinburgh’s cafés and pubs feel like they were made for reading, writing, and long, intense conversations about literature.
- The Elephant House – Famous for being the café where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter.
- The Café Royal – A Victorian-style café with stained glass windows, chandeliers, and major ‘scholarly elite’ energy.
- Deacon Brodie’s Tavern – Named after the real-life inspiration for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A little spooky, historic, and, not to mention, STUNNING… a winning combo.
